Georgia Overview

"Described variously as part of Europe, Central Asia or the Middle East, Georgia has long been a flash point for cultural and geographical collision. Its culture is ancient and built around a vast variety of influences; its people are a mix of traditional and very modern; and the food is legendary". Lonely Planet Guides

Georgia is a mostly agricultural country that borders with Russia to the North, and Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan to the South. It has a relatively long coastline along the Black sea which has been vital to its development over the centuries. The border with Russia is naturally divided by the Greater Caucasus Mountains.
Its recent economic history has been one of gradual decline, but since 2000 the new Govt. has been successful in creating a positive GDP, and an effective tax collection system. Georgia is totally dependent on Russia for its energy and natural mineral resources, which has caused some tension in recent years. The current population is about 4.6 million people.
