Article: Krakow has the "wow" factor - things to do on a short break
Anne Heffernan visits Krakow and points out the highlights.
Wandering the streets of the Old Town or the former Jewish district, Kazimierz, you will find a Krakow pulsating with life in all its variety. Galleries full of fascinating exhibitions present both the classic and the experimental avant-garde; cafs, pubs and restaurants offer the finest in both Polish and world cuisine - and all are an integral part of any visit to Krakow.
Krakw came through WWII unscathed; the 20th century's impact having been confined to acid rain. It has retained a wealth of old architecture from different periods; the tallest structures dominating Krakw's skyline are the spires of old churches. It's a city alive with character and soul.
Ringed by parkland, the Old Town is both charming and compact. The Main Market Sq is flanked by historic buildings, museums and churches. St Adalbert's Church is one of the oldest, dating back to the 10th century. And the museum of museums, Czartoryski Museum, exhibits a fascinating and impressive collection of European art.
When to go...
Arguably, May may be the loveliest month of the year in Krakow - the best months to visit are from April to October. Advance booking during these peak tourist times is recommended, even though there is an ever-increasing supply of accommodation options. If it's festivals you're after, July is a great month to visit - anything and everything from street theatre to jazz. If you miss out on July's festivities, not to worry, Krakw has one of the richest cycles of annual events in Poland. Content provided by Lonely Planet Guide
