Bremen is steeped in more than 1200 years of history. Several buildings, streets and squares have shaped this old Hanseatic city, while much of its centuries-old heritage has been retained. The Market Square in the heart of the city is among the foremost landmarks that typify the city, rating with the most elegant in Germany. Not to be missed are imposing St Petri Cathedral with its famous lead cellar, scenic Schnoor Quarter, which occupies several tiny squares and little houses alongside crooked lanes from the 15th and 16th centuries, or Böttcherstrasse, a pedestrian walkway that was built here by Ludwig Roselius, inventor of decaffeinated coffee. And there are the popular Town Musicians who once sought to begin a new life in livelier-than-elsewhere Bremen and have stayed ever since in sculpture.
