Built on 90 islands and one of Europe's great trading centres, Amsterdam is a lively city of boats, bicycles and beer. Stroll through the narrow streets of Rembrandt's birthplace, amongst rows of gabled houses with richly decorated facades and picturesque house boats. The focal point of Amsterdam is Dam Square with the Royal Palace, national monument, and Nieuwe Kerk, (new church). The Damrak leads down to the beautiful station building, which seems to be floating!. To the west you can visit the house where Anne Frank hid from the Nazis or the "artistic" and lively Jordaan area, whilst eastwards the bustle of Waterlooplein leads to the calmer green areas of the botanical gardens and zoo.

I Took my partner there for my 40th birthday two weeks ago, and I'm glad I chose it.
Its the ideal city to chill out and just walk around as its significantly smaller than many people expect. We took the train there from London, which was much nicer than flying, and it meant that arriving at Amsterdam Central allowed us to walk the 1km to the hotel, or use the tram system.
The Van Gogh museum is a must, as is the Rijksmuseum. we were also lucky enough to come across a gallery that specialised in Marc Chagall, my favourite, as I am from the same town.
We stayed at the hotel Imperial, close to Rembrandtplein, which was economical and ideally located. Irina

28 July 2007 I took a short break to Amsterdam in September with my girlfriends. We took the KLM flight from London City and stayed at a 3 star near the Skinny Bridge.
It was the first time any of us had been there, and we absolutely loved it - It has to be done at least once in your life but there is no way I am letting boyfriend go there alone!!! Dani Howell
