Short Breaks and Holidays in the Netherlands with Reviews

Netherlands Overview

An excellent country within Europe to visit is the Netherlands. Typically, people think of windmills, biking through the countryside, or fields of beautiful flowers when they think of the Netherlands, but this country is so much more. Known as being a “large but small country”, the Netherlands offers an abundance of pleasurable surprised. People can visit the larger tourist cities, or spend time in a location off the beaten track.

The capital of the Netherlands is Amsterdam, a place well worth the visit. The unique combinations of authentic food, friendly people, and quaint pubs give this destination a special atmosphere. Amsterdam has charming character with beautiful architecture from the 17th century, gabled houses lining the streets, canals, more than 1,200 bridges, small markets and fabulous hotel accommodations.

Amsterdam also offers a unique experience whereby visitors can take a 110-glass topped cruise boat along any of the 165 canals. On this trip, the world’s narrowest house can be seen, measuring just a little over three feet wide. Other activities while on the cruise include stopping at a jewelers shop to watch diamonds being cut and polished, visiting the famous house of Anne Frank, or visiting museums where many of Rembrandt’s renowned paintings are on display.

One of the most enjoyable activities to do while in the Netherlands is bicycling. The country is relatively flat and the countryside breathtaking, making biking easy and a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. The Netherlands is a great place to visit regardless of the season, although summertime is the busiest. However, to experience one of the most beautiful times of year, we recommend October due to the Indian summer. Now, for people who want to avoid the larger crowds, winter is also a great time to go to the Netherlands. Museums, shopping malls, and restaurants are open but quiet.

"The Dutch aren't bogged in their clichés, even though bikes, dykes, windmills and blazing flower fields are pretty much the norm outside the major cities. Do as the locals do - grab a bike and explore. It's a very big small country, and full of salutary surprises".

"One of the chief pleasures of the place is its lively contrast between pragmatic liberalism and the buttoned-up just-so primness of a culture founded on Calvinist principles. In Dutch society, ostentation is anathema and fuss of any kind is regarded as undignified". Content by Lonely Planet Publications

Reviews of holidays in the Netherlands and Amsterdam city breaks

You must see Amsterdam! A place where people are accepting and tolerant of different cultures, orientation, languages, etc. We enjoyed visiting the many museums, bars, and restaurants. Make sure you visit the red light district, just say you've done it though, but be very cautious about drug dealers and pickpockets. James Anderton, Windsor, UK.

Amsterdam is a city that is taken out from a film set. The architecture in Amsterdam is unbelieveably beautiful helped by the fact that the city was reclaimed from the sea, just like the rest of the Netherlands, all the buildings seem to lean forward. The canals are great fun. Dutch people are multilingual and you can always get by in English. Mo Khan, West Ealing, London
