Short Breaks in Barcelona

Barcelona is a global city, the capital of the Catalonia region, the second city of Spain and the largest city on the Mediterranean with a greater urban area population of 4.4 million. It has become a centre of the arts, culture, trade exhibitions and of course a major city break tourist destination for Brits and other Europeans alike.

Despite Spain’s economic problems, Barcelona is one of the most prosperous urban areas in the European Union.

The origins of Barcelona go back to 300 BC when the father of Hannibal, Hamilcar Barca a Carthaginian General landed here and founded the city. Later, the Romans were to name it Castrum (Roman Military Camp). Roman grid layouts are very much in evidence in the centre of the city to this day, and Roman remains were found in the ancient cathedral walls which dated back to 343AD.

Barcelona was later conquered by the Visigoths, the Moors and Charlemagne, before finally becoming merged with the lands of Aragon by dynastic marriage.

Barcelona is particularly famous for the work of Antoni Gaudi, a local architect with a highly distinctive style. Many of his buildings around the historical centre led to the city being declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, to include Gaudi’s masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia Cathedral. Although the building of the Sagrada Familia commenced in 1883, it is not yet complete, and probably won’t be ready until after 2020.

The Ramblas is the main tourist centre with its street performers, bars and cafes. In recent years it has become somewhat notorious for its uncontrolled prostitution and pick-pocketing.

Review Barcelona City Breaks

Wow, what a fantastic week in Barcelona! Such a colourful and thriving city, so much to see. There seems to be fiestas every weekend, the beautiful streets full of people enjoying the summer.
I really reccommend getting a T-10 metro ticket, half the price of buying singles everytime and there's so much to go and see across the city and the metro is the best way to get around. We found accommodation on www.happycheaphotelBarcelona.com and stayed in the Gothic Quater - not too far from all the best sites and within walking distance to the beach. I really love La Boqueria food market with loads of delicious foods, meats and fruit. Had a smoothie, very tastey! Can't wait to visit next time :)

I just got back from a month and a half Barcelona trip. Overall, I had an incredible time. I'm a student and was definitely on a budget and was able to make the most of my stay, and see most everything that Barcelona had to offer. I ordered a Connect Club card before my trip for 12 euro and got discounts at almost every restaurant and bar I went to. You can check out thier website at connectclub.com for a full list of discounts. I really enjoyed the food in Barcelona but it was a good idea to reserach places with good reviews. Be careful on Las Ramblas, it may be convienent to stop there for a quick bite but it's definitely a tourist trap and you'll get caught paying 10+ euro for a drink. Wander around to other parts of town, I would suggest the Gothic or Born areas, those were two of my favorite. Less touristy places are definitely fun to check out, they're a lot less expensive and make you feel like a local!

Hi guys, I just got back from my gap year! Fantastic experience I recommend it to everyone. I gathered many information on the internet using forums like this one. To find accommodation I found very useful this site: www.worldsitehotels.com, I think it’s much better than expedia and the likes. What else...go traveling you won’t regret it!

I was a little hesitant about going to Barca at first, as it struck me that it was a little too trendy for my liking.

On arrival, I was pleasantly surprised, and thanks to my wife's insistance on going, we hade a really great time. It was pretty hot there, so when we had enough of looking around we crashed out on the beach for a while and did a bit of swimming too.

One word of warning, watch out for some of the kids on the beach, they are incredibly audacious theives, and any items of value should be well hidden, or even tied to your person if necessary!

We were on holiday in Mallorca last summer and since it was raining we decided on a day out to Barcelona by the Acciona ferry. It was three hours but the journey was worth it as Barcelona was just great. We therefore decided to miss the ferry back and stayed in Beca for the rest of the week!
