Possibly Europe's best preserved medieval city and its prettiest, Bruges was a thriving port in days past. The prosperity of its merchants is evident everywhere: in handsome gabled houses, ornate guild-halls and majestic churches. From the central Belfry, 366 steps high and offering revealing views of narrow cobbled streets, peaceful canals and panoramas beyond all within an easy stroll. Travel its picturesque canals to experience the city's remarkable peace and calm. Bump over cobbles in a horse-drawn carriage. Then retrace your steps to savour the tiny lace parlours, chocolate boutiques and old curiosity shops of a city aptly dubbed the 'Venice of the North'.
TIP: If you can, travel between Sunday and Thursday, as the weekends get very full in Bruges. On the weekends, you may even find that staying at a hotel in Brussels is better value since there are great deals on 5 Star hotels and the train ride to Bruges is just 45 mins.
Bruges is just another 40 minutes by train from Brussels, so its easy to go there as a day trip or as a weekend break, its just a matter of changing platforms at Brussels Midi Station. Any Eurostar ticket allows you to any Belgian station, so you don't even have to buy another ticket. Its a peaceful little town that gets pretty busy on the weekends, so book ahead.
