If you are looking for a bargain break in Paris, with no-frills accommodation, but nontheless with good levels of service, then the Grand Hotel de Paris is a very good option. It's close to Gare de l'Est, which is in walking distance from Gare du Nord, which means you can even skip the Metro fare.
The Hotel Est is very much in the same class, and managed by the same people. It's also close to Gare de l'Est but down more towards Place de la Replublique. It's on a tree-lined boulevard which is relatively busy, but the rooms are clean, well maintained and no-frills.
A small, good standard tourist hotel situated on a wide boulevard leading down to Place de la Bastille with its trendy bars and Mitterand's 'grand project' - the Opera Bastille. There are local street markets along the centre of the road on Saturday and Sunday, which are a popular local attraction.
