All vehicles licensed for use on public roads and not exceeding certain dimensions are transported on DB Autozug trains.
Maximum vehicle height
This varies from country to country :
Germany - 2.05m
Austria - 2.05m
France - 1.75m
Italy - 1.83m
It is extremely important that you know your exact vehicle dimensions before you book, otherwise there may be a problem at check-in. Any limitations in your vehicle will be pointed out at the time of online booking, however.
Maximum Vehicle Width
The max. vehicle width is 2.05 metres.
Maximum vehicle length
The max. vehicle length is 5.30 metres. With longer vehicles the chassis would make contact with the floor during loading and be damaged in the process.
Trailers can be carried together with a vehicle. The actual trailer must not be more than 5.00 metres long (inclusive of drawbar). The total length of the combined vehicle must not exceed 10.30 metres.
The max. vehicle length for trips on “co-operation trains” run to Vienna by ÖBB is 5.00 metres.
Requisite ground clearance
Ground clearance of at least 10 cm is required (inclusive of exhaust pipes, sump, tank etc.), as otherwise the chassis may come into contact with the floor of the carrier when you drive onto it.
How are vehicles secured on DB Autozug trains?
All motor cars are secured with scotches. Lowered vehicles are rendered secure by means of sand bags.
Motorcycles are generally parked on the carrier on their side stands by the rider and secured by means of wheel scotches and four lashing straps.
Luggage may be left on, against, next to or in vehicles during carriage at the driver’s own risk and liability, though the arrangements differ from country to country.
Luggage stowed externally must be particularly well secured, since it has to withstand motion-induced wind at speeds of up to 160 km/h as well as cross-winds – even when travelling “backwards”. The loading staff will be pleased to assist in lashing items down. Please ensure you adhere to the max. overall vehicle dimensions.
