The TGV Est is new service that was opened in 2007 along a brand new line that goes from Paris via Strasbourg to Zurich in just 4.5 hours. The train travels at speeds of up to 320km/h. This new line is in continuous development with the new line from Reims to Strasbourg being built at the moment which will be ready by 2014. The TGV currently runs along the coventional track at 160 km / hour.
Paris to Reims is now possible in just 45 minutes when it took twice that time before. Paris to Strasbourg used to take over four hours but can now be reached in 2 hours and 20 minutes, and 30 minutes less when the new line is complete in 2014. Paris to Luxembourg takes just over 2 hours.
This new line was the fastest in the world until 2009 (when one of the Chinese high-speed rail lines was opened). The actual train that broke the record at a speed of 574.8 km/ hour is pictured above. It runs as a normal service train to this day.
