The Golden Pass Panoramic train passes through Europe’s most stunning routes. It connects the Vaud Riviera on Lake Lucerne with the heart of Switzerland and also the airports at Zurich and Geneva. You can travel on this train using your Swiss Pass which can be bought on the Swiss Travel System website. It also provides a link through to the Bernina Express and the Jungfrau Train.
Their main feature are the extra-large windows which fold around the contour of the train enabling you to see a full view of the majestic Swiss scenery, hence the name.
From Montreux, with its relatively warm climate you rise steeply to look down on the lake, until you pass through the Passesa Tunnel, which then brings you out to a world of deep pine forests, picturesque villages and raging mountain streams. It’s like a seamless transition from the lakeside to the mountain.
The train crosses the Simmental, the valley gets narrower, the forests even darker, and you see the train running alongside the River Simmen before it finds its way into Lake Thun. You eventually reach the Bernese Oberland, with its traditional cottages painted in bright colours and dotted around a central whitewashed church.
You pass the castle of Wimmis before reaching Spiez on Lake Thun, and then on to Interlaken.
Pass Lake Brienz and the Giessbach Falls and on a clear day look up to the Jungfrau, the Monch and the Eiger sitting above you. Then you go up in the mountain pastures in the direction of the Brünigpass, a pass at just over 1000m above sea level. The landscape is gentle on both sides. On the other side of this pass are the three small lakes of Lungern, Sarnen and Alpnach and just beyond the Lake of Lucerne. You are now in the historic heart of Switzerland and close to your destination of Luzern
In front of Luzern Station is the lake and the bridge over the Reuss leading to the charming old town, the docks and beautiful luxury hotels.
