With parts of it dating back 800 years, the impressive Schloss-Hotel Petry stands at the heart of the pretty town of Karden. The substantial main building stands proudly overlooking the Mosel, with the more modern restaurant and communal areas at a lower level in front. It’s easy to find, being just across the road from the railway station, although the noise from the trains is barely noticeable from the well-soundproofed accommodation.
The rooms are surprisingly spacious, with typically German clean and neat functionality. Décor is a little bland, but that doesn’t detract from the comfort and facilities that are both first class. Most have small balconies that look either towards the river, or the steep green valley sides behind the town. They are well equipped with gleaming modern showers, cable television, phone, safe, and a mini-bar.
The hotel boasts a varied choice of dining, with the large main restaurant, the smaller and more intimate Weinstube, the pretty Schlossstube, or even the neatly presented gardens when the sun shines. The cuisine is excellent, offering a mixture of traditional German, and appealing international dishes. And, as you would expect in the heart of the Mosel Valley, the wine card is superb.
The Wellness Centre offers a sauna, solarium, whirlpool, and a well-equipped gymnasium. They also offer two opportunities you maybe wouldn’t associate with the Mosel. Nordic walking and Shiatsu are both available at very good rates, and with such wonderful walking country surrounding the town, the former is a great way to see more of this delightful area. www.schloss-hotel-petry.de/
