Gary Phillips visits this former Palace in Coimbra and discovers a hotel with not only incredible value for money, but great food, sporting, spa and leisure facilites.
The estate has been in private hands throughout its history, but notably founded on a famous legend of the tragic love story of Pedro and Ines, hence the reference to “Lagrimas” or tears in English. This legend has been narrated by the worlds most famous writers, including Antonia Ferreira, Voltaire, and Victor Hugo to name a few.
Originally a farm, with a palace attached, the most illustrious visitor was the Duke of Wellington who was a frequent visitor due to his friendship with the owner at the time of the Peninsular Wars, who fought with him at the famous battle of Bussaco. Wellington had two Sequoia trees planted, and are do this day referred to as the Wellington Sequoia’s.
It’s actually worth visiting this hotel just to see the grounds. For such a modestly-sized hotel, the grounds are pretty extensive with unique features all around like the Fountain of Tears, the Wellington Sequoia’s, and modern art installations that are frequently replaced. There is a 600-seat amphitheatre at the back of the gardens, where concerts and theatre productions are held during the summer; the acoustics are apparently superb, but what really makes it special is its position with the famous Coimbra University as a backdrop.
The outdoor pool is brand-new with a position which eliminates any draughts, whilst the indoor pool is part of the spa facilities.
