Hotel Astrid Reviews...

If you’re looking for an inexpensive break in Normandy, without sacrificing quality, then the Hotel Astrid is a good choice. Centrally situated in the old town heart of Caen, just a couple of streets from the quayside, it’s an attractive small hotel in a traditional French style.
It’s named after Princess Astrid of Belgium who died in an accident in 1935, seemingly just because the owners had an affection for the young royal.
The rooms are surprisingly spacious for the grade of hotel. Care has also been taken over the décor, and you get the impression the furnishings have been chosen because they are right for the room, and not – as can sometimes be the case - simply to furnish a hotel as economically as possible. You have the choice of twin rooms, a family room, or a budget option. There is also one listed in English as the ‘Nuptial Room’, why after a wry smile I guess is the bridal suite!
The en-suite rooms have satellite television, free wi-fi (and very simple to connect to), and room service on call. On the down side there are no tea making facilities in the room.
For a hotel in the centre of town it is unusually quiet, and even on a warm evening with the window open there was little to disturb your sleep. Be aware that in high summer this part of France can suffer for mosquitos, so leaving the window open isn’t always a good idea!
The staff are really friendly and accommodating, and will go out of their way to ensure you enjoy your stay. It is very much an establishment aimed at those wanting a good, clean, functional, place to stay, and not somewhere where you will spend a lot of time during the day. There are no lounges or communal rooms, and breakfast is served in your room… although that is actually very pleasant and of a good standard. It is brought to your room at the time you request.
If you’re driving, then you may find parking a little difficult. There is a car park nearby, but it does charge. Overnight its usually possible to park on the local streets without restrictions, though, so it’s not a big problem. Overall, The Hotel Astrid is a very pleasant place to spend a few nights, without lightening your pocket by too many Euros. Trevor Claringbold, Travel Writer
