| Description | Brest will host the International Maritime Festival that gathers together boats and crews, as well as key players and lovers of our international maritime heritage. Nowhere else can one admire such a variety of sailing vessels and fleets, and no other event showcases as many historic vessels. Brest 2008 in figures: - 2,000 traditional and classic sailing boats - 25 nations - 15,000 sailors - 60 coastal vessels - 300 exhibitors - 2,000 coordinators Real Harbour Settings The Port du Commerce will be the place for living maritime culture, where you will find the fleets and entertainments. Several countries will be Guests of honour: Galicia, Croatia, Madagascar, Norway and Sweden. The Port du Château Marina, will be reserved for ordinary sailing yachts, the Pen-Duik fleet and ocean racing yachts. The Penfeld area will be opened to delegations from Madagascar and Vietnam, but also to sailing yachts from the ‘50s and ‘60s, large yachts, gigs and, of course, the Marine Nationale (French Navy). A Sailing Area Teeming With Activity Brest will welcome nearly 2,000 vessels, ranging from large sailing ships (up to 117.50m overall) to gigs (3-5m in length). It should be noted that the two tallest ships in the world, the Russian four-masters, the “SEDOV” and the “KRUZENSHTERN” will be present. You will also find unusual boats from seas and oceans the world over, with traditional boats from Croatia, Galicia, Norway, Ireland, Madagascar, Martinique, Australia, Brazil, etc., some of which are more than a hundred years old. Quays Dedicated To Maritime Culture Brest will be honouring maritime culture in all its diversity, by recognising a different country of honour every day: Friday, July 11th will be devoted to Vietnam Saturday, July 12th - Madagascar Sunday, July 13th - Norway Monday, July 14th - Celebrate France's Bastille Day with the Marine Nationale (French Navy) Tuesday, July15th - Croatia Wednesday, July 16th - Galicia A Rich Sailing Programme Set To The Rhythm Of The Sea Every day in the docks: - manoeuvres and demonstrations with live commentary all afternoon - large schooners - junk rigs - Norwegian coasting vessels - Bantry yawls, etc. During the entire festival, in the daytime you will also be able to enjoy the many theme-based tours which will be on offer, such as visiting large sailing vessels and even boarding passenger cruisers or historical boats, visiting the yards, painting exhibitions and the Marine Museum, learning how to paddle on traditional kayaks, attending performances and concerts; while at night you will be dazzled by the famous nocturnal parades and the fireworks. At the end of the festival, the Great Brest-Douarnenez Race will begin, with everyone taking to the sea together to celebrate the event. | |
