whistler

News has reached us of a new product launch from a UK company called Footprint Holidays.

The company has long had a ski programme based exclusively in the resort of Morzine in France’s Portes du Soleil area but they have just launched a fully catered chalet in the Canadian resort of Whistler.

Catered chalets used to available in Whistler but the financial crisis in the mid noughties  and poor exchange rates led to tour operators pulling out completely. To all intents and purposes, that was the end of that.

Fast forward a decade or so and things have improved on the financial front, both in terms of confidence and exchange rates. Footprint therefore think the time is right to give it a go and be the first to re enter this market.  So far they are seemingly the only ones, which brings with it a certain amount of uncertainty and risk. As the old saying goes “If you can keep your head while all those around you are losing theirs,  you may have underestimated the situation!”

However, Footprint remain steadfast. Within days of contacting their existing database of Morzine fans, over half their Whistler availability had been filled. The trial is admittedly limited, with just one chalet available, being manned by experienced staff from the company’s Morzine chalets, but this is a very encouraging sign for them – and Whistler.

The favourable exchange rates have had a knock on effect for skiers, with a 10 day fully catered ski holiday costing £850 pp, roughly the same as a seven day break in Morzine. This excludes flights and transfers (Fly to Vancouver, which is roughly 2.5 hours drive)

The Footprint catered package includes a choice of breakfasts, freshly baked afternoon cakes, canapes, aperitif, three course dinner and premium wines. In addition a lift to the slopes each morning and one into town after dinner (if desired) is also available.  Unlike in Morzine, the staff can also act as informal ski guides for clients once they have finished their duties.

At the time of writing their is only availability left in March 2015. If you fancy being at the cutting edge of new skiing holidays then perhaps this is the year to head to Canada. If the trial is a success, Footprint will no doubt expand next season. No doubt there will several of the larger tour operators watching them with interest.
