A UK tour operator is offering families a discount on the opening weeks of the traditionally more expensive summer peak season. Matthews Holidays, an ABTA bonded tour operator with some 40 years experience, is promoting what they term their “School Holidays Kick Off Week” where early bookers can get an additional 12% discount. The advantage of this scheme is that it means children won’t have to be taken out of schools without permission, a practice that is increasingly leading to parents being fined. The offer is available on holidays that start between the 17th and 22nd July.
Example prices for the lead in “Focus” two bedroom mobile home are £659 per family for seven nights, including return Dover-Calais ferry crossing, use of the on site facilities (which usually include swimming pools, water slides, bars, restaurants and various activities/clubs) and a Matthews Holidays rep available in case of problems. A similar 14 night break costs £1319 per family. Upgrades to larger homes, such as the Magnum shown in the picture, are available.
Modern mobile homes are a far cry from the privations of traditional camping with full size beds, fitted kitchens, fridge freezers, heating, mains electricity (so important for recharging iDevices, games consoles and all the other electronic peace keepers), toilets and showers. They even come with private barbecue area and parking space.
The sites featured in the offer are all close to the celebrated sandy beaches on France’s western coast that are amongst the best in Europe. Notable attractions worth visiting (dependent on site chosen) would be the historic walled port of La Rochelle in Charente Maritime, the astounding experience that is Le Puy de Fou (to call it a theme park is an insult) in the Vendee or even the salt pans where the celebrated Fleur de Sel de Guerande is harvested (regarded as the finest salt available by many of the best chefs)
