Skiing at les Saisies

Skiing at les Saisies

Travel writer Jenna Powell jets off to the French Alps for Eurodestination where she experiences skiing for the first time! She finds a beautiful ski resort with lots of snow, here’s the report on her stay….

Les Saisies …
A beautiful village resort at the foot of Mont Blanc. At an altitude of 1650 metres this excellent ski resort boasts panoramic views, a range of relaxing spas and amazing sporting activities. Having never been skiing before, I was, to say the least, a little apprehensive about visiting a ski resort as a complete beginner! However, on arrival I immediately felt at ease at this beautiful and well established resort.

Breathtaking Views
Les Saisies is a perfect resort for the whole family, whether you’re a beginner like me or an advanced skier. There’s an ideal combination of skiing levels from beginner slopes to the black runs for the more experienced skiers. Apparently, ablack run is fast and exhilarating — a little bit too much for me to venture anywhere near!Ski equipment rental is easy with Piccard Sports. They are located in the centre of the village and once you get your skis on you’re ready to go. Les Saisies pride themselves on the high standard of their ski instructors which is particularly important for the beginner. My instructor was very friendly, patient (he had to be with me!) and believe it or not, had me skiing in no time!

Activities
If you are looking for something a little different on a ski holiday then this is a good resort to choose. Apart from the skiing of course, there’s a wide mix of other activities to enjoy including snow-shoeing, snowboarding and dog sled rides. Les Saisies also has a Mountain Twister, which is great fun for all the family. I’m all for fast rides and I couldn’t wait to climb onboard. It’s fairly similar to a rollercoaster with a sled on the rails. It’s a unique and exciting experience and a definite ‘must do’ when visiting the resort. The sled is controlled by brakes so you can control the speed of your descent. So whether you feel like going really fast or taking a slow steady speed to enjoy the views, the choice is entirely yours. I took the fast option, both times … great!

Nordic Ski Experience
If you fancy doing something extra on your ski trip to Les Saisies then you may wish to consider the Nordic Ski Experience. The Nordic area around here is one of the largest and highest in Europe, offering 120km of cross-country trails. If you’re travelling with the kids they can also take part as there’s a Nordic slope reserved especially for children aged from 5 to 10 years. Within the Nordic skiing area you also have the chance to practice target shooting and I surprised myself, as this was something I was particularly good at!

Relaxing
After an exhausting but exhilarating day on the slopes there are other activities to enjoy. I couldn’t wait to visit the Tahiti Eden Spa, which is a spa and tea lounge located in the heart of the village. The Spa gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the tropical heat of the steam baths … superb; or spoil yourself with one of the many spa treatments on offer. One of the best bits I liked was lazing in the outside Jacuzzi overlooking the slopes. I was able to relax, unwind and make the most of the magnificent views that this region has to offer.

Eating
You will never be short of places to eat during your trip to Les Saisies. There is a wide choice of restaurants to choose from both in the centre of the village and on the slopes. I would recommend a visit to Le Benetton – perfect for lunch on the slopes. This reasonably priced restaurant offers great food, amazing views and easy access to all levels of skiers. A visit to La Ferme du Chozal, a short drive away, is well worth considering for a night out. This wonderful hotel restaurant offers a gourmet experience in the beautiful setting of the preserved valley of Beaufortain. There are also plenty of other restaurants in Les Saisies, the La Cachette Gourmande is a great place for good food, good wine and a relaxing atmosphere.

Where to Stay
I stayed at Le Hameau du Beaufortain. This 4 star luxury residence is located just 2km from the resort centre in a tranquil forest setting conveniently based at the foot of the slopes. There’s a super pool and spa area and the ski-in, ski-out option gives a great sense of freedom. Each apartment is fully equipped with all your daily needs as well as a large balcony to enjoy the mountain air and breathtaking views of the snowy mountains.
